LIMITED EDITION PRINTS FOSSILISED FOOTPRINTS
I take photographs mainly using my old analogue medium format film camera, a Mamiya RB67 and occasionally a 35mm Pentax K1000. I use film cameras as the limited number of negatives seem to parallel my slower more meditative explorations. The permanent impression created in a photographic negative also captures a moment in time when the medium and environment interact in a very material way, like a fossilised imprint.
BLACK & WHITE PHOTOGRAPHY
Black & white offers an experience of a nature-based image on a level other than realism. For me, it feels like a passage into archetypal and subconscious themes. The black and white origins of photography may also evoke ideas around the passing of time, resulting in a vintage feel to prints. This may be amplified by the visible grain characteristic of the some of the films I use.

THE JOURNEY FROM NEGATIVE TO FINE ART PHOTOGRAPHIC PRINT
A print always begins it’s life as my photographic negative. To transform the image into a digital form, I send individual negatives to be scanned by a professional photographic lab. Once returned I inspect the digital representation and undertake minimum tonal level adjustments to mirror the warmtone of a darkroom paper. I entrust a fine art printers based in Chesterfield to produce the final archival pigment ink print (a process otherwise known as giclée). I choose the Hahnemühle range of professional Fine Art papers for their beautiful texture and museum quality. Dependent on the subject matter of a photographic image, I currently select either Photo Rag 308 cotton based paper or William Turner mould-made watercolour paper from the Hahnemühle range.
